Can you check if a DVD ROM lens is dirty on a computer before cleaning it?

i'm using TDK dvd's and I want to burn a movie but I received an error, just saying that "the burning process failed" or something like that. I have burned on these type of dvd's in the past, with ConvertXtoDVD4. It's now that the software website tells me that the lens may be damaged or dirty. I'm at a loss with this.
