Uneven floor upstairs in my house...possible causes?

Mind you most of the floor itself does not feel uneven...but in a couple of parts it feels like a piece of wood is sticking up and everything to each side of it is much lower. What is likely causing this...and is it worth taking the carpet out to inspect (IE is it likely structural like, for example, a piece of board about to break)?
